Titletown

Chris and Me at Green Bay (2009)Green Bay, Wisconsin is a wonderfully neat town. It is home to the last truly small town professional sports team. What makes the Packers special is the community that surrounds it and supports it. It is not owned by a George Steinbrenner or Jerry Jones type. The Packers are owned by its community and fans. What made Brett Favre their hero was his down to earth, blue collar, working man’s personality. He brought Green Bay back to the title games it had grown accustom to during the early years.

This weekend the legendary QB returned to play against his old team, this time clad in purple and gold. I was lucky enough to witness the tussle on the tundra. Much was made about his multiple efforts to retire only to return late in the summer. I would describe his behavior as that of a drama queen; however, the Packers organization did choose to trade their favored son. Packer management wanted to move on without number 4 leading the team to a younger quarterback. It was a nasty divorce with lots of crying, some kicking, and lots of media coverage. It was ugly on both sides.

Unlike the ESPN and Fox coverage of the jeering crowds, yesterday I noticed a lot of truly classy people in the stands. As Favre took the field for his pregame warm up there were hundreds standing and clapping. There were signs displayed thanking Brett for many years of good memories. As the boos drowned out the warm greetings there were also T-shirts and signs calling Favre a traitor and even calling him Judas. It was a hostile environment, but I am sure Alabama or Florida State was a little more hostile when he was in college at Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles being lead by Favre commonly upset ranked opponents. College fans in the south are much more vicious than pro football fans. Trust me on this one. The only true difference in a pro fan’s wrath and a college fan’s passion is that alcohol can be sold in pro stadiums (notice I didn’t say “consumed”).

Everyone we met seemed to have something nice to say about the aging diva. One lady we met in our hotel said she slept better on Saturday night just knowing that Brett was in Wisconsin again. Another man remarked as he was pumping gas that he was a die hard Green and Gold man, but he wanted to see Favre do well on Sunday. There were more number 4 jerseys in the stands than any other player, true there were some green and some purple. Heck, there were also a few number 4 Atlanta Falcons jerseys and I saw one Southern Miss jersey as well. Overwhelmingly, people still support him. The gift shop in Lambeau still sells Favre jerseys. One clerk told me they sell more 4s than 12s even after the divorce.

Overall the game was great. The Packers have an up and coming team. Pretty boy Aaron Rodgers will one day take the pack to the playoffs, maybe even bring home the title. Brett Favre can also still play for the love of the game. The Vikings gave the aging player a chance to make one more run to the title! As we left I was sad. The environment that surrounds Lambeau is strictly for the enjoyment of football. The stadium is like a stadium should be, even with the addition of luxury boxes. The memories of Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi can still be felt in this simple but classic structure.

Brett Favre Pass

This morning we woke up in Rockford, Illinois one time home of the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Growing up, one of my favorite movies was A League of Their Own. This morning we took our time driving up the Wisconsin country side, lots of crops, barns, and livestock. We also stopped at a hunting and sporting goods store to buy warmer clothes, all in preparation for a football game.

The origin of this trip was way back last year. My buddy, Charity and I wanted to make a road trip to a Packers game. Life and the trip changed and Safety was added to the mix. We picked our trip date early in April, just after the schedule was released to the public. I think Brett Favre was drinkin’ beer in Mississippi and filming Wrangler commercials in April. There wasn’t any talk of Brett being a Viking. During the summer ESPN started reporting the possibility of Favre’s return to the NFL. Then one day, in a frenzy, a jet left Hattiesburg, Mississippi and when it landed Brett Favre was a traitor.

Now it is Halloween and I am here with my parents. We have had a great trip and we are anticipating a great game. I am sure it would be more enjoyable to see the Packers beat up on a lesser team. Or see Brett Favre in his younger days. But that is not going to happen on this trip. There is a battle brewing tomorrow and it will not be pretty.

Many articles and blogs have described Favre’s defection to Minnesota as a nasty divorce. There was talk of making the world’s largest waffle to honor Favre’s indecisive nature. Maybe he is dragging his feet as he heads to retirement, but let’s look at the Packers for a moment. They wanted to go in a different direction. Green Bay wanted a divorce as much as, or more than, Brett wanted to play another season. They wanted to chase another younger woman, Aaron Rodgers. No matter what, Brett is better off with a more complete team to finish his career with and Green Bay is building a team for the future.

Brett Favre Ass

The only thing missing in this whole saga is class! There have been passive aggressive comments made by both sides. I have seen lots of angry fans and nasty comments. But I leave with a photo taken just outside Brett Favre’s restaurant located on Brett Favre Pass. I will let the photo speak for itself. No matter what, this has been a great adventure so far.

Back Seat Blogger

This morning with a quick stop to drop of the Boo-ster, we drove from Huntsville to Memphis, Tennessee to meet up with my parents, Big Mama and Big Daddy. Our final destination will be Green Bay, Wisconsin and the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. I am merely a passenger on this trip. A trip that I almost canceled days before, because I wasn’t sure I could juggle all my commitments. Marcia, you were correct! I am glad I am here now.

So far today, I have taken a nap, passed out mid-flight refreshments, and spotted a camel on the side of the road. Heck, a camel on the side of the road is an every day sighting in Missouri! Our road companion and GPS guide for this trip is Le-a (pronounced Le-dash-ah and is a real name). We call her Le-a because she is on the dash-ah board of my parent’s vehicle! Le-a reminds us to drive straight on I-55 north. When we exit the interstate for snacks or gas she gently reminds us to make a “legal U-turn” or “turn right to I-55.” Really what Le-a wants to say is “Fool, I didn’t tell you to turn back there. Get back on the dang road!”

Big Daddy likes to drive yelling at all the crummy drivers while Big Mama knits. I am aft of the driver’s seat trying not to get sick as I type on my laptop and Daddy curses the mini-van drivers. You know, mini-van drivers are the world’s worst drivers! And yes Amazon, I am blogging!!! However, Chris has had his lap top out longer than I have. I think he is doing work or looking at porn.  (That was added to see if the former-editor was paying attention. He is really doing work.)

We stopped in Sikeston, Missouri at the “Home of Throwed Rolls,” Lambert’s Café. It was quite an enjoyable meal. The waiter that was the designated roll thrower wore an Alabama ball cap. He caught my eye and I nudged Chris, hey isn’t there some customary greeting you Alabama people give in passing? Chris being the shy guy, didn’t belt out Roll Tide and the President of the university is considering revoking his diploma.  I digress.

Alabama ball cap boy got me to thinking. Do you think that they have relief pitchers in the bull pin just in case the lead thrower misses the plates and hands of hungry customers? Do you think they scout minor league waiters to see if they have what it takes? Do the managers talk to each other asking who the star hurler is in the organization? “Hey, we got a great prospect here in Foley, want us to send him up to Sikeston?” Or the manager that has the difficult conversation with a struggling waiter, “Son, you lost something on your delivery. We are going to send you to Branson for a few rehab starts and see how you progress.” Really, if you think about it, if you are the home of the throwed rolls, your talent has to be good.

All in all we have had a great day. The trip has reminded me of all the long family vacations we took. Growing up we visited Chicago and St. Louis for baseball games. Once we even took the train to New Orleans for a football game. There was another time we drove to Dallas in Johnny Stahls’ van to see Brett Favre and the Packers face the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game. Favre lost that game. We will see how he does on Sunday facing his old team. Wow, there will be some conflicted souls in Green Bay.

Bah Humbug!

Ebenezer Scrooge was the villain changed by the power of Christmas in the classic Charles Dickens’ novel A Christmas Carol. I am the opposite of Mr. Scrooge. I have been changed by the over commercialized, highly marketed, and retail driven holiday known as Christmas. I know I should be happy during the season selected to celebrate the birth of Christ, but I just don’t like Christmas.

I don’t like Christmas trees. I don’t like them because you spend thousands of dollars over the life of your home decorating a tree and sprucing up around the house. Why can’t you just give this money to the less fortunate? Do we really need an evergreen to remind us of Christ’s love for us? Imagine if our families didn’t get into heated arguments while trying to untangle the Christmas lights? We would all be better people if we didn’t give our mothers evil stares over the multicolored lights.

I don’t like wrapping paper. Wrapping paper is so wasteful! We spend millions of dollars each year in over priced paper. Did you know that the average mark up for wrapping paper is 500%? And we just throw that money away. Why can’t we give that to a needy family in the area? Yes, I wrap all my Christmas packages. However, I wrap each package in brown paper, which I purchase for $8 in a 65ft roll. Much better unit cost ratio than traditional reindeer clad paper. I wrap my packages in brown paper, because of the classic Sound of Music song, “Favorite Things”.

I hate impulse purchasing for Christmas presents just because you have to get your in-laws something nice. I am a believer that each and every gift should be from the heart just as our Creator gave his only Son for our salvation. True, my gifts are not as great as that, but my gifts come from the heart! When I purchase a gift it is not just what was marketed on Nickelodeon, ESPN, or NBC last Saturday morning. Last year my dad made me a manger after my blog proclaiming that it should be the symbol of Christmas not a spruce. I am so proud of my manger, because it was from the heart.

Why am I ranting about Christmas in October? Well, today as I went into work at the Barn there was Christmas decorations hanging from every stationary point. Christmas lights were hung and Santa was arranging the furniture in the corner. I don’t understand why we can’t have fun with Halloween, then build up to Thanksgiving and finally climax with Christmas. I will tell you why. We do it because some three-piece suit skuzball told his boss weak humans would purchase more crap if Christmas lights were installed before November. I believe Christmas is more about giving than receiving.

This season please find someone who needs something more than a new iPhone. You know those people that are less fortunate than you. Find them and give. When you give to them remind them of the real reason for Christmas. Remember, Christ was born into this world to save the world from its own self indulgent. It is funny how Christmas is all about indulgent and the gimme-gimme syndrome. Bah Humbug, bring me Thanksgiving and then we will talk about Christmas!

Good Okra Hunting

Fighting OkraToday we ventured to the book store to purchase our Fighting Okra paraphernalia! I’m sure you’re thinking, “What’s this Okra thing all about?” Delta State University’s official mascot is the Statesmen. And it is lame. Yes, I know that many Delta State alumni will disagree with me and accuse me of blasphemy! The older generation of alumni frowns on the popularity of our un-official mascot, the Fighting Okra. However, since the 1980s it has grown in popularity. Simply put the image of a politician is not particularly frightening. Wait? Some politicians are frightening but in a very different way.

Legend has it that the Okra was the inspiration of the DSU baseball team. I heard one story that the baseball field was once an okra patch and one stubborn plant returned seasons after the field was converted into a baseball diamond. I do know that tall baseball players clad in all green look similar to okra pods. The angry looking okra cartoon is much more villainous than an athlete. Its sinister sneer could be intimidating except that you do notice that it is a violent vegetable leering at you. There are really too many stories to tell, but as the popularity grew so did the tall tales. Heck, plus cheering for a “Lady Statesmen” is like cheering for a “straight lesbian.”

When I was a student… ten years ago(!!!!)…a student brought the cartoon character to life. Brian Formby made the first Fighting Okra costume from a green sleeping bag to be worn on the side lines. He converted the green sleeping bag into the angry veggie with a donation from Lynn Sullivan. She gave her father’s boxing gloves and boots. Paired with some funky green leggings, the Fighting Okra was brought to life. Way back when I was a student, the book store only carried one t-shirt and a coffee mug with the un-official mascot. Today, there were over a dozen items with the Fighting Okra! The items range from shot glasses to hoodies and beanie veggies to baseball caps. Wow, how the Okra has grown!

The popularity of the Okra is not the only thing that has changed since I graduated in 1999. My favorite eateries way back when were Airport Grocery and A la Carte! Both are still good, but not excellent. They have lost something. Airport moved away from the airport and A la Carte changed ownership. You really can’t be great forever. And I am sure my memories of all my friends and the wonderful times I had in college has clouded my current judgment. I have found two new spots that are absolutely fabulous. Please if you visit Cleveland, Mississippi stop by Hey Joe’s or the Warehouse, two super restaurants with great atmosphere, excellent service, and really good food!

On this recruiting trip I was able to look back at my time here at DSU. I loved every minute of it. I recall the hell of my first semester. I think I had all the toughest professors. I visited one of those professors today. Dr. Elizabeth Sarcone was heading to class when I popped in her office. I wanted to say hi, because after three semesters of Sarcone the Terminator, I actually learned something. I only got to spend a few moments with her, but I thanked her for encouraging me to write. I always respected her for teaching with fervor and integrity. I remember her never compromising her educational philosophy even on a bonehead like me. It was wonderful to see her, shake her hand and thank her!

All in all today was a wonderful day. Our trip was extended because we are speaking to a room full of pilots tomorrow. Great break for us! I visited with several librarians tonight as Amazon ate more food. She ate a gallon of loaded baked potato soup today at the Warehouse. Tonight it was more Mexican food! Whether it is an Okra or a Statesmen it is still my first home away from home. Whether it is Airport Grocery or Hey Joe’s this place has a special place in my heart. Whether it is a librarian or a rocket scientist my life is blessed from all the wonderful people I meet along the way.

Mosquitoes and STDs

Rain, rain and more rain! I left North America and was transported magically to Southeast Asia or a tropical rain forest in South America. Oh, did it rain! Being in Cleveland as it rained today reminded me of all those days I didn’t want to go to class. I would rather hibernate in my room! But not today, we had to find staff to work at Space Camp and Aviation Challenge. Today we focused our efforts at DSU’s Teacher Career Fair and visited three Aviation classes.

The Teacher Career Fair was great, lots of great kids wanting to expand there knowledge base and have fun with kids. There was one lady I spoke to this morning that had a love hate relationship with the Mississippi Delta. She was telling me how many mosquitoes the Delta had. Her comment was, “The Mississippi Delta has lots of mosquitoes and STDs!” In my head I thought, “STD’s did the mosquitoes contribute to that high number? Where did this come from?” I grind and commented with the Delta has lots of great food and wonderful people. Her response was when right back to the gutter, “Oh, lots of food to make us obese and wonderful people to fall in love, giving us all those STD’s!” I didn’t know how to respond. I just asked if she should would like a coozie? Wait, we are in Mississippi, the people here call them huggies.

The Delta is a wonderful place. Lots of food places to eat! This afternoon we visited one of my all time favorite places A la Carte Alley on Court Street! I love it! My favorite sandwich from there is the Turkey & Cheddar on Kaiser roll! Sounds simple, but yum, yum good! Not as good as the PBC Wedge, but it would be on the map of good sandwiches. Amazon did enjoy her loaded baked potato soup and grill cheese sandwich but the butter had a sweet taste to it. I love how the Delta has so many great little shops and eateries! I miss the Delta, but I wish this rain would leave.

This afternoon we visited a few Aviation classes. We chatted with lots of wonderful people. In one class there was a guy, Mr. Talks-a-lot! He had on a John Deere ball cap. My comment to him was, “Did you know John Deere built airplanes way back when?” Obviously he didn’t know about this trivial factoid! We covered our material and hopefully encouraged a few Okras to work at Space Camp. Later in the afternoon, I check my email to find an email from “the John Deere Hat Guy.” He wanted to ask more questions about camp and such.

We met up with Mr. John Deere Hat at a great new restaurant called, Hey Joe’s. Great place, it looks like a warehouse but really funky and cool! It was non-smoking with lots of brick and old soda signs around the room. It would be the restaurant I would open if I could open a restaurant! It was a very fun place with lots of cool music. We heard Pearl Jam and Journey on the loop multiple times. Amazon is eating for a whole team of X-Campers. Since we have been on our trip she has eaten a large plate of fajita nachos, two sausage biscuits, soup and salad, and 12 wings from Hey Joe’s! WOW! I am use to traveling with Snapper who doesn’t eat much! Amazon eats everything. Wait… she is eating my computer.

Today was a gloomy day. It could have been because I realized that it has been ten years since I graduated from DSU in education. I still love being an Okra, even if the skies are gray. We visited the gym. I showed Amazon the six national championship trophies and the Margaret Wade Trophy. My school has tradition! It was fun showing a ball player around my school! I love Hey Joe’s! For me it is the new Airport Grocery! After Airport Grocery moved, it isn’t the same. It is dead to me! Bring on Hey Joe’s and bring on more recruiting.

Tomorrow we will purchase Fighting Okra shirts… America’s Favorite Fighting Vegetable!

Welcome to Missi-Sloppy, Rain Boots Required

This week recruiting I get to visit my home state, Mississippi! My companion is Amazon, fearless X-Camp Counselor and guardian of half names. Our trip to Missi-Sloppy (a Marcia Lindstrom term) started off rainy and wicked! The whole trip down, we drove under gray skies. We arrived in Starkville on the campus of Mississippi State University in the middle of a flood. Quickly we noticed random girls walking around campus with designer rain boots and running shorts. Yes, rain boot and running shorts.

It was not just a few girls. It was enough sightings while we were looking for parking that we felt obligated to ask a few who passed. The first girl we asked said she didn’t have clean jeans. The second girl said that her jeans wouldn’t fit in her boots. Hum… We met a good friend of mine at the student center of MSU. We asked her at the same time I was text messaging Auburn alum and sister of a current Auburn student. It was uncanny how precise the story duplicated itself across the SEC. I even asked a friend who lived in Oxford, home of Ole Miss, about the boot phenomena.

All girls witnessed with boots and running shorts wore designer boots. They had paisley, polka-dots, stripes, or plaid boots on and Nike running shorts. Why? What fashion statement does this send? Is it a cultural thing? Is it a sorority hazing? Or better yet, is it the minimum leg required shown on campus before the first frost of the year. Maybe it is a dress code for cow colleges (Miss. State & Auburn). No wait, it has been spotted at Ole Miss as well. Maybe this is the female answer to guy’s Bama Bangs.

As we left town we stopped at a local store that sold MSU gear, footwear, and Greek-wear. We found a rack stocked with hundreds of Nike running shorts and over in the corner were those fashionable boots. So if you want new rain boots, Sperry is the brand to buy. They will look great with your running shorts. If someone can figure out why these girls decided to make this fashion statement, please tell me. Until then I will continue to think for myself and wear what I want. Maybe they should pick their own clothes out too.

After leaving Starkville we visited Camp of the Rising Son. I listened to the rain falling on the trees and longed to be seventeen again. I loved working at CRS. Now, I am traveling all over the southeast recruiting staff to work at Space Camp. Amazon and I stood on the back porch talking to Carrie Browning, CRS Camp Director for about an hour. When I was seventeen, Carrie and I worked as cabin mates. She was the counselor, and I was the AC. If someone would have predicted that she would be the director of CRS and I would be managing Aviation Challenge as grown ups, we would have both thought you were crazy. It was good visiting Lake Anne, even if the dock was covered in water.

On the drive to the farm I think Amazon discovered why all the girls needed rain boots. We turned of highway 407 onto to a dirt road. Yes, I am sure there is a redneck joke somewhere. Amazon thought I was going to take her out in the middle of nowhere and feed her to alligators. She said, “What is this?” I was shocked. I thought she was a country girl from Tennessee. I asked if she had seen a “dirt road” before. Her answer was classic! She said, “Only in movies!” The roads were messy and sloppy. And I am sure the crew that works on camp vehicles will look at the Endeavour and ask if we went off-roadin’. No, we didn’t need to play in mud puddles, but we did visit my home. And to me home is from Starkville, to CRS, to Winona, and across to Okra-Land, Delta State University. But that is tomorrow’s story.

Ruckus

This weekend Chris and I visited the farm in Mississippi! We arrived just before a thunderstorm hit. And I am not talking about my nephews, but that too. Chris and I have grown accustom to peace and quiet so when we visit the farm we must be ready to rumble. The boys want to play, the boys want to wrestle, and the little girl wants to sing and dance. What more could dinks ask for?

Please don’t get me wrong. My nephews, Rhett and Reese, are made from the same stock as me! I am loud! I am stubborn! And most of all I am a giant goof ball! On Friday the boys and I were watching baseball. They Yankees were trailing to the Twins. We shared stories on why we loved Derek Jeter and why A-Rod was over paid. The boys really like A-Rod! When Alex Rodriquez hit a two run homer in the ninth inning to tie the game Rhett and I went nuts! Unfortunately my dog, Boo, doesn’t like loud noise. Boo barked and howled at the two of us. This all happened in between efforts to pull out one of Reese’s teeth. Loud doesn’t really describe the noise level. To sum up the night, the tooth wasn’t pulled, Mark Teixeira won the game with a walk off hit, and Boo barked.

Boo doesn’t like commotion! On Saturday we visited our church up the road. We all piled into my dad’s truck. The seating arrangements were Rhett, Reese, Chris, Boo and me on the backseat and mom, dad and Lucy on the front. Yes, we didn’t have enough seat belts. But, it was a dirt road or something like that. We hopped out and left Boo in the truck with the boys and Lucy. If you want to know what terror looks like, trap Boo into a truck cab with my niece and nephews. His ears were cocked backwards and his eyes were as large as golf balls. If he could talk, he would be pleading for deliverance back home!

Lucy's FingersHe survived as did I. But I am not so sure about Lucy. Saturday we cooked steaks out on the grill. Hot grill plus little girl equals burnt finger. Poor little Lucy cried and cried! At first, I thought she had cut her finger on something. No blood, so it wasn’t a big deal. She continued to cry. I can’t speak crying kid so I didn’t understand what was going on. I tried to help with my expert Be Ready Camp skills, but setting up a triage tent was an over kill. When I saw the little blisters on her fingers I almost started to cry. We bandaged her fingers up by using ace bandages as substitute for gauze, but we didn’t use duct tape.

We changed gears from baseball to football on Saturday just as we were changing gears from treating a second degree burn to pulling a tooth. As a child, I felt that parents had a twisted desire to pull their children’s teeth. This was proven when my mother was so determined to pull Reese’s tooth that she bribed him. That didn’t work. She tried inspiration speeches… “Yes, We Can!” That didn’t work. I tried comparing it to an eight second bull ride. Reese loves cowboy movies, but that didn’t work. But my mom did wait, and wait until Reese fell asleep. She tried stirring him to get up and then yanked the tooth with floss looped in his month. As cruel as I thought it was, Reese jumped up, whimpered, and rejoiced! “Cool, my tooth is gone”, he proclaimed as I was having flash backs of my childhood!

The night settled down, Boo cuddled up, and eventually I fell asleep. I love visiting my childhood home. I would say that it brings me peace and refreshes me but that wouldn’t be completely true. I love my family. I love all the little kid hugs and cheers. I love my mom’s cooking. I love showing Chris around my family’s farm. I love it all! It may be noisy and rough at times. But the ruckus is what makes Rhett and Reese special! Lucy on the other hand is just sweeter than a rice-crispy treat! And being on the farm is simply magnificent!

Go State!

I grew up in Mississippi as the daughter of a Mississippi State graduate in Ag-Econ! Unfortunately and joyfully that meant I was inevitably a Bulldog fan. Mississippi State University is a great school with wonderful people but they don’t have a winning football tradition. To date, MSU is 486-528-39 all time. Not a record you can be proud of! But I am! I am proud to be a maroon clad, cowbell ringing Bulldog fan! I am a fan even though I went to school at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss (Being a Fighting Okra is another blog all unto itself).

See, I have a theory. The reason why Mississippi State isn’t an SEC power house is we don’t have a notable chant. Heck, I consider it a blessing we are even in the SEC. In the conference where you hear War Eagle, Roll Tide, and Hotty Totty, Go State just doesn’t stack up. The only thing wimpier is Go Dores! And don’t forget the annoying ones like the Gator Chomp and Hog Calling, Sooie! See Go State could represent any state university.

It is always fun walking with an Auburn fan or an Alabama fan through some foreign land. Without a doubt there will be someone to cry out War Eagle or Roll Tide. It is fun! I once witnessed a prideful war of words while on a double-decker bus in London when I heard cheers between a few Alabama fans and my Ole Miss friends. Screams of Hotty Totty and “fight on, fight on” from the Alabama fight song filled the air around Trafalgar Square. I was standing motionless looking for my cowbell. That is our come back. Just ring a big ass bell until everyone’s ears are bleeding. If you can’t beat them, deafen them!

Two years ago my hubby went to Starkville for an Egg Bowl with me, my brother, and his kids. It was a chilly late November afternoon. We tailgated with my cousin in front of the dairy building. Chris, being an alumnus of the UAT-University of Alabama Tuscaloosa (I say that just to get under his skin), didn’t know the joy of tailgating near the Junction at MSU. We went to the book store and purchased him some maroon clothes. There is a big difference between crimson and maroon, like 90 miles. I took my cow bell and off to the stands we went. I think Chris said that he wouldn’t ring that “damn bell!”

Rhett, Reese, and WalterLate in the game State trailed Ole Miss. There was an obnoxious Rebel fan waving his keys and telling us all to go to the parking lot it was over. State mounted a come back and my husband looked to me and asked, “Can I ring the bell?” We took turns ringing the bell as State climbed out of a seventeen point hole! My nephews, Rhett and Reece, rang their bells hard too. It is really fun watching a 30 pound kid ring a cow bell. The cow bell owned him. As State kicked a winning field goal we all rang our cowbells in the Rebel fan’s ear until our hands hurt. It was a glorious day. A day that makes you root a little bit harder for the Dawgs!

So we don’t have a great chant or a grand tradition of winning. We will cheer to the bitter end. We may not be on TV every Saturday or compete for the SEC title each season but when we bleed, we bleed maroon and white. At the end of the day, SEC football is great from the top down. Mississippi State doesn’t have a Tim Tebow or a dead Bear. But the future can hold anything. And as long as we believe in our Bulldogs while we ring our bells anything can happen. Go State!!

Lessons from Hamburgers

In-N-Out BurgersAttention Southerners!!! There is something better than Chick-fil-A and Hardee’s, and that is In-N-Out Burger. It originated in southern California in 1948. Harry and Esther Snyder’s business philosophy was to give customers the freshest food you can provide with friendly service in a clean environment. Today it is still privately owned by the family which still holds true to the early ideals of the restaurant.

I learned about In-N-Out on my first recruitment trip to Arizona. Snapper and I stayed in Phoenix that year. We saw an In-N-Out every five miles. Curiosity got the best of us both and we were forced to find one. There is an epic tale of almost dying in a horrific rental car accident, but all I can remember now is a ladder in the back of a truck and turning into the restaurant was dangerous. Since that faithful day, I have eaten In-N-Out on each trip to the Southwest. It’s a yummy tradition!

I am always fascinated by the companies that can keep it simple and succeed. I know that fast food is unhealthy if eaten at every meal or to an extreme, but it is so good as a snack every once in a while. Look at McDonald’s; they seem to re-invent themselves every four or five years. They also have to look out for the ladies who will spill hot coffee in their lap and sue the pants of the company. McDonald’s is not simple. They have frozen food, microwaves, and heat lamps, while In-N-Out make their burgers fresh right after you order one. Yes, this makes it not so fast, but their customers don’t seem to mind.

Companies that stick to what they are good at seem to succeed! Why does every company have to get so big that they lose touch with what they are good at? Look at the banking industry. It has been said about the government bail out that AIG and Goldman Sacks got so big that it would be unhealthy for the whole economy to let them fail? I simply don’t agree with that statement. They grew too large by doing unhealthy and unsafe business. The banks that were bailed out should have not risked so much. So much they couldn’t recover. Just like people who eat fast food every single day. They become so unhealthy they can’t risk any more.

In America we think BIG! We want big cars, big companies, big stadiums, and now big government. Why can’t we just be lean and mean. Moving around town is easier for a Volkswagen Bug than it is for a Sherman Tank. We are becoming over inflated in all that we do. Americans have become lazy. They want their Big Mac and they want to have it their way too! At In-N-Out there are five items. You can order a Double-Double, a Cheeseburger, a Hamburger, French Fries, or beverages (shakes and soda). Not that complicated. No wraps, chicken wings, chili, or breakfast items. Their menu is simple and to the point. Why can’t we all get back to the basics? Why can’t we live by the K.I.S.S. method – Keep It Simple Stupid?

It is refreshing to order a freshly made cheeseburger for $1.99 and it is not on a “value menu!” Why can’t life just be simple, why do we have to over complicate it? Then I think, “Silly Ruth!” How ridiculous am I asking for a simpler life when I am sitting on the floor of an airport terminal with my laptop out chained to the power outlet using free WiFi and writing a blog! I guess we have gone too far down the road of complexity. I can’t have a simple life without my iPhone and laptop. But I do wish I could have In-N-Out more often than once a year.

Arizona, Part 3

In 2007 Space Camp changed the way they recruited counselors. Rather than recruiting only in north Alabama they would send staff to colleges around the United States. That first year I was lucky enough to travel to Arizona and my home state Mississippi! Traveling with me to Arizona was then counselor, Jen DiCarlo, a.k.a. Snapper. There are three things I will never forget about that trip. First, Snapper being nervous about traveling with me. Secondly, staying at the Ramada Inn in Mexi-Ghetto. And finally, the epic explosion of a Diet Mountain Dew in my lap, on my shirt and in my face when we stopped for directions to Embry Riddle.

Last year on our second trip we attended Embry Riddle’s career fair. Snapper and I made the trek out to Prescott to man the booth. We didn’t plan on visiting any other college in Arizona other than Embry Riddle. But, we took it upon ourselves to venture around the city to find two other colleges. First was Yavapai College, a community college which is home to other universities’ satellite campuses. Yavapai is the only community college I know that if you can stick around long enough you can get a doctorate. They are also home to seven time national soccer champions and really cool t-shirts! We also found Prescott College, which is a school that focuses on environmental studies. We searched for a while looking for the school. If you blink driving through you will miss it. We visited the campus book store and felt that if we wanted to purchase illegal drugs we could. That is if we wanted to. We decided that would be our first and last visit.

Yavapai College, Prescott AZYear three and I am still on the recruitment team. Charity hasn’t kicked me off the team yet. I am trying to figure out how to take an In-N-Out burger home to her, which should keep me on the team for another year. I am trying to stay out of trouble in the southwest. However, yesterday while visiting Yavapai College I thought we were about to be kicked off campus or worse. We set up in the campus cafeteria right at the front door so everyone could see us. We met lots of nice people including a Space Camp alumni and Navy veteran. The cafeteria’s general manager walked to our table and asked what we were doing. We told him cheerfully, recruiting staff to work at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. He didn’t want a job. He asked a few more question, like who gave us permission to set up in “his cafeteria.” Snapper and I both debated the best way to escape the wrath of Mr. Food Service. All was ironed out, but it was tense there for a few moments.

Yavapai has a beautiful campus, very modern buildings with great architecture. It is most definitely the nicest community college I have ever visited. After meeting some great people and hanging out at the library and purchasing t-shirts at the book store, we ventured to the airport to look for the Yavapai chapter of the Ninety-Nines. This was a futile exploration, but we did enjoy the adventure. I think the adventure is the greatest thing about being on the recruitment team.

What would a recruiting trip to Arizona be if we didn’t stop at the Prescott Brewing Company for our favorite sandwich? Embry Riddle graduate and U.S. Air Force officer, Joyce Hirai, a.k.a. Forecast, introduced Snapper and I to PBC and the PBC Wedge. PBC is a great restaurant and micro brewery. They have coasters on the wall, I would estimate over 3,000 coasters decorated the walls. The restaurant is in a shopping center similar to the shopping arcades in London. Last night we ate out in the atrium and watched the shop keepers close their novelty shops for the night. It was enjoyable just as always. We did miss the company of Forecast!

Today we had an info session at the Christine and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Library and Learning Center. Wow, whoever picks names for buildings should learn to shorten them? A dozen students showed up to hear our song and dance. I was very excited by the great questions they asked. Probably the greatest question was, “So how is the food at camp?” This man knows what is important in life. You can’t be happy without a full belly. After the info session we visited the ERAU flight line. I was very impressed.

On our way to visit the flight line we saw an iron cross towering over the hillsides. It was made of various pieces of scrap. The amazing thing about the cross is how perfect it looks on the hill but out of place since there were no churches around it. The colors of the Arizona terrain are dusty browns, rusty reds and sandy greens. The randomness of the iron pieces is similar to the randomness of the trees, brush, and rocks. I am sure weary travelers are reminded of Christ just like I was as we drove along the highway. Any hillside is a perfect hillside for a cross!

Iron Cross, Prescott AZ I am lucky to visit this beautifully ugly area. Prescott is so wonderfully neat. Snapper proclaims daily that Arizona is so different than home. She wouldn’t want to live here, but loves the cactus and hills, the rocks and trees. The one thing she doesn’t love is the rattle snakes. There are houses in between rocks and on the edges of cliffs. There are not many bright colors and hardly any green grass. I love visiting different places to help remind me why I love the south so much! I am thankful for this trip each year!

Yankee Stadium (Sept 2009)From great college games to family vacations to big league parks, I have had some seen great moments in baseball. I have listened intently to ballgames on the radio, watched records be broken from my college dorm room, and visited historic ball parks. Without a doubt I love baseball. I know most all the lines to all of Kevin Costner’s baseball movies and cry when watching the Pride of the Yankees.

Baseball is just in my blood. It has been since my parents took me to see Pete Rose return to Cincinnati to face Johnny Bench and the Reds. I was four and counted every pitch and watched every play. Since then, I have visited Wrigley Field, saw Noland Ryan pitch, and went to a playoff game in Atlanta. I was lucky to have parents that enjoyed the finer things in life such as cold beer and a hot dog at a ball game. We visited many stadiums growing up, but there was one I didn’t visit as a kid.

Since I was old enough to know who Babe Ruth was I wanted to go to New York to visit his house. Last year during the second to last weekend of the regular season Chris and I made our trip to Yankee Stadium. It was a quick trip between the second and the third week of Be Ready Camp to see the Yanks play the Rays. The Rays were the hottest team in baseball and headed to the playoffs while, the Yankees were headed into the off-season.

Chris and I drove straight from Be Ready Camp graduation to the Courtyard in midtown Manhattan. The next morning we took the 4-train to Yankee Stadium. We visited shops and toured around the area. The gates opened and we scurried through the tight maze to see the field. There are only a few things in life more exhilarating than the moment you reach the top of a stadium ramp to the opening of the bleachers where you can see the turf! The bright blue sky and the green plush grass are a bone tingling sight! Only thing that compares visually would be a grandiose view from one of our majestic National Parks (or perhaps one of the Be Ready firefighters).

We watched batting practice in the warm sun and hung out with grumpy New Yorkers, sadly some stereotypes are proven by the worst of every group; however, everyone we met was friendly and kind! There was one lady that cheered War Eagle our way when she saw Chris’ Alabama ball cap [Editor’s note: Roll Tide]. After finding our seats we made friends with everyone around us. We were those fans, the ones that sat in other people’s seats until the shade covered our seats. I am a redhead. I didn’t want to burn. We went inside for Yuengling and dogs. We didn’t want to drink the light beer that was being peddled in the stands.

Derek Jeter The game itself was awesome. I had dreamed of going to a Yankees game for years. I think Derek Jeter knew this fact and went 3 for 4 with a home run. He also tied Lou Gehrig’s Yankee all time hits record. ARod also gave us a little show. In the first inning he hit a grand slam which put everyone on their feet. The crowd was electric. And just because I was in town, they put Mariano Rivera in for one out! It was the perfect day. [Box Score]

This fall as the anniversary of our trip neared I wanted to go back. But sadly I think the new stadium is not as enchanting. There was something magical knowing that I was sitting in the same ball park Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and a host of other greats played. Not only did Yankee Stadium play host to baseball and football teams, but it was the site of concerts and Pope visits. If the bricks and mortar of that great stadium could talk they would tell an epic tale of America’s pastime.

New Yankee StadiumThis year the Yankees are headed to the playoffs. There will be no farewell speeches at the last game. The new park has lots of glitz and glamour. I will cheer for them just as I always have, but I am sure the new park will not have the same magic. I only visited one day last year. But I feel like I had a little bit of the Yankee magic rub off on me. Now I carry that with me where ever I go.
